Sanganeri print is a traditional hand block printing style originating from Sanganer town, 16 km south of Jaipur, Rajasthan. It is characterized by delicate, small-scale floral and botanical repeat patterns printed on white or off-white backgrounds. Unlike Bagru's earthy resist-dye style, Sanganeri printing uses direct application of colour - typically in soft pinks, reds, greens, and blacks - creating lightweight, feminine patterns that feel both traditional and versatile.
The characteristic "buta" (small floral droplet), lotus, and multi-petal flower motifs of Sanganeri have made it one of the most exported Indian block print styles globally. Many European textile brands and Indian fashion houses use Sanganeri-inspired prints for their summer and resort collections.
Origin & History of Sanganeri Print
Sanganeri printing dates back to the 16th century, when artisans from Gujarat settled in Sanganer and introduced their block printing skills. The proximity of Sanganer to Jaipur, then a major royal capital, allowed the craft to flourish under Rajput patronage. By the 18th century, Sanganeri fabrics were being exported to Europe by the East India Company, making them one of India's earliest internationally traded printed textiles.
Today, Sanganer has over 100 block-printing units and is recognized as a UNESCO craft cluster. The GI-tagged Sanganeri print is also one of the base styles used in Jaipur's famous "Jaipur Print" which has achieved global brand recognition.
Why Designers & Brands Choose Sanganeri Print
Sanganeri's white-ground floral pattern is the most accessible and universally appealing of all Indian traditional prints. Its lightness and femininity make it a consistent performer across dress material, saree lengths, and home textiles. The pattern translates well to western fashion - many international brands use Sanganeri-inspired florals for summer dresses, blouses, and accessories.
For manufacturers, Sanganeri is a volume category - high-demand, consistent year-round, with strong export markets in France, the UK, and the US. The white-ground format is also the most photographically appealing for e-commerce, driving strong online sales performance.

Buying Tips for Sanganeri Print
Tip 1: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Tip 2: Check the GSM rating before ordering. Heavier GSM means more body and structure, lighter GSM gives more flow.
Surat mills specialize in polyester and blended fabrics. For pure cotton, we source from Ahmedabad and Bhilwara.
