Leheriya is a traditional Rajasthani resist-dyeing technique that creates diagonal stripes of colour running across the fabric in wave-like patterns. The word "leheriya" itself means "waves" in Hindi. The distinctive look - multi-colour diagonal bands or chevron-like waves - makes it one of the most recognisable regional prints of India. In digital printing, leheriya patterns are reproduced with the same characteristic diagonal wave rhythm, available in traditional colour combinations as well as contemporary palettes.
Traditional leheriya is associated with the monsoon season and the festival of Teej in Rajasthan, where green and yellow combinations are considered auspicious. The pattern also includes "mothda" (diamond formation leheriya) which is a more intricate variation.
Origin & History of Leheriya
Leheriya has been practiced in Rajasthan for centuries, primarily in Jaipur and Jodhpur districts. The technique involves tightly rolling the fabric diagonally and then dip-dyeing in sequence with multiple colours, creating the signature wave effect when unrolled. It is particularly associated with the weavers and dyers of Sikar, Jodhpur, and Jaipur.
Historically, leheriya was made for royalty and worn during seasonal festivals and celebrations. The more intricate "mothda" leheriya - where the rolled fabric is dyed in two directions to create diamond shapes - was reserved for upper-class wear. Jaipur's GI-tagged textile cluster includes leheriya as one of its flagship crafts.
Why Designers & Brands Choose Leheriya
Leheriya has seen a significant revival in Indian fashion since the mid-2010s, driven by a renewed interest in regional craft aesthetics. The print works beautifully across sarees, dupattas, kurtis, and dress material. Its wave-form pattern is both festive and casual - versatile enough for wedding season and everyday ethnic wear.
Fashion designers have used leheriya in fusion wear - combining the diagonal wave with contemporary silhouettes. In export markets, leheriya is classified as "artisan Indian textile print" and commands premium pricing. The print is particularly strong in the women's ethnic wear category for the spring-summer and festive seasons.
