Madhubani (also called Mithila painting) is a traditional art form from the Mithila region of Bihar, India. Characterized by vibrant colours, intricate geometric borders, and nature-narrative motifs - fish, lotus, sun, moon, peacocks, wlephants, dancing figures - Madhubani painting on fabric is among the most visually rich of all Indian art-print traditions.
The style features double-line outlines filled with cross-hatching and pattern fills, with no blank space left in the composition. Traditional subjects include scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, wedding ceremonies, agricultural festivals, and the natural world. On fabric, Madhubani is printed as all-over patterns, placement prints, or border designs.
Origin & History of Madhubani Print
Madhubani painting has been practiced for over 2,300 years, with roots in the Mithila region straddling India and Nepal. Traditionally, Mithila women painted on the walls and floors of their homes during festivals and wedding ceremonies, using natural pigments. The tradition was passed down from mother to daughter, with each family maintaining its own distinct style. Madhubani received GI protection for Mithila painting in 2019.
Why Designers & Brands Choose Madhubani Print
Madhubani's visual density and colour vibrancy make it one of the most impact-making prints in the Indian artisan print segment. For fashion labels, Madhubani-print fabric commands premium positioning as wearable art.

Buying Tips for Madhubani Print
Tip 1: If you are exporting garments, ask for Oeko-Tex or GOTS certification. We can arrange certified fabric for export orders.
Tip 2: Do not judge fabric quality only by price. Rs 10 cheaper per meter often means 20% less durability.
Surat mills specialize in polyester and blended fabrics. For pure cotton, we source from Ahmedabad and Bhilwara.
