Bagru print is a traditional hand block printing and resist-dyeing technique originating from Bagru village near Jaipur, Rajasthan. It uses natural dyes - indigo, rust (alizarin), black, and mustard - applied through hand-carved wooden blocks onto fabric. The signature patterns include circular floral medallions, geometric fills, and repeating buta (leaf/floral droplet) motifs. Bagru print is closely related to Dabu printing - often the two are combined, where dabu (mud resist) is applied before Bagru block printing for complex multi-colour effects.
Digital Bagru-inspired printing captures the characteristic hand-blocked look: the slight imperfection of hand-stamped repeats, the natural colour wash effect, and the traditional earthy palette that makes Bagru immediately recognizable.
Origin & History of Bagru Print
Bagru printing has been practiced for over 400 years by the Chhipa community of artisans in Bagru village, located 30 km from Jaipur. The craft flourished under Rajput patronage and became one of the primary textile-producing clusters supplying fabrics across Rajasthan and beyond. Bagru received a GI tag as part of Jaipur's handcraft traditions.
The natural dyeing process used in traditional Bagru printing is ecologically significant - using tamarind seed powder, alum mordant, and fermented iron solution for colour fixing. This has made Bagru a flagship craft for India's eco-textile movement, with growing interest from European sustainable fashion brands.
Why Designers & Brands Choose Bagru Print
Bagru prints occupy a strong market niche in both Indian domestic fashion and international export. The earthy, natural palette - rust, navy, forest green, mustard - aligns with the global sustainability and "slow fashion" movement. International buyers from Europe and the US source Bagru-inspired prints for eco-conscious clothing lines.
In the Indian market, Bagru works strongly in the kurta, bedlinen, and home textile categories. The rustic-artisan aesthetic appeals to urban consumers seeking distinctive traditional-craft prints. With growing premiumization of Indian ethnic wear, Bagru-print fabric is increasingly positioned as a designer material rather than a mass-market commodity.

Buying Tips for Bagru Print
Tip 1: Fabric width matters for cutting efficiency. Our 44-inch fabric suits kurtis and blouses, 58-inch works better for sarees and gowns.
Tip 2: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Surat produces over 30 million meters of fabric daily, making it India's largest textile hub.
