Checks and plaids encompass a broad family of grid-based patterns formed by intersecting horizontal and vertical stripes in two or more colours. The major sub-categories include: Gingham (simple two-colour equal-sized squares), Tartan (complex multi-colour plaid with a specific colour sequence - associated with Scottish clans), Buffalo Check (large bold two-colour squares), Windowpane (fine lines on a solid ground forming large open squares), and Madras (loosely woven Indian cotton plaid with a soft, blurry check effect).
Origin & History of Checks / Plaid
Checked textiles have been produced since ancient times across multiple cultures. Scottish tartan is among the most historically documented checked textile tradition - clan tartans were codified in the 19th century under King George IV's visit to Scotland, though checked wool plaids were worn much earlier. Gingham originated in Southeast Asia (the word comes from Malay "genggang") and was traded by Dutch and British merchants from the 17th century. Indian madras check cotton from the Madras region was exported to global markets from the 18th century.
Why Designers & Brands Choose Checks / Plaid
Checks are one of the most commercially reliable print categories globally - they have permanent, non-cyclical demand across menswear, womenswear, and children's wear. The category spans all price points: from budget gingham to luxury heritage tartan. Checks are particularly strong in menswear (shirts, blazers), children's school uniform fabric, and women's casual fashion. The pattern also has strong export demand particularly from Western markets.

Buying Tips for Checks Plaid Print
Tip 1: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Tip 2: Check the GSM rating before ordering. Heavier GSM means more body and structure, lighter GSM gives more flow.
Surat mills specialize in polyester and blended fabrics. For pure cotton, we source from Ahmedabad and Bhilwara.
