Rayon / Viscose Fabric
Soft, fluid, and print-perfect rayon and viscose fabric - India's fastest-growing casual wear and ethnic fashion textile for bulk production.
What is Rayon / Viscose Fabric?
Rayon (also called viscose) is a semi-synthetic fabric made from regenerated cellulose fibre - typically from wood pulp. It is the most cotton-like of synthetic fabrics, with a soft, smooth hand feel, excellent drape, and high moisture absorbency. Rayon is lighter than cotton, softer than polyester, and takes print colour more brilliantly than most natural fibres. It is widely used for casual kurtis, printed fabric, indo-western fashion, and affordable sarees. Modal is a premium version of rayon with even softer hand feel and better durability.
Key Properties
Key properties: ultra-soft and smooth against skin, high moisture absorbency (even more than cotton), excellent drape and flow, lightweight (100-160 GSM typical), brilliant colour uptake for prints, wrinkles easily (a known limitation), not as durable as cotton when wet. Rayon's combination of softness and print vibrancy makes it the most popular fabric for mass-market printed kurtis in India.
Origin & History
Rayon was developed in the late 19th century as the first man-made fibre - originally called 'artificial silk'. The viscose process, developed in 1892, became the dominant rayon production method. In India, rayon production grew significantly from the 1970s as a cost-effective alternative to silk and cotton for fashion fabric. Today India is one of the world's largest rayon consumers, with massive demand driven by the kurti and ethnic wear market. Lenzing (Austria) produces premium Modal and Tencel rayon variants widely used in sustainable fashion.
Why Brands Choose Rayon / Viscose
Rayon is arguably India's most important fabric for the fast-fashion ethnic wear segment. Its price point is significantly below cotton while delivering better softness and drape, making it the default choice for mass-market kurti manufacturers. For digital printing, rayon delivers some of the most vibrant colour results of any fabric. Brands targeting the Meesho, Amazon, and wholesale kurti market rely heavily on rayon. Its softness also makes it popular for children's wear and casual homewear.

We ship to garment units, boutiques, and exporters across India with a minimum order of 200 meters.
Buying Tips for Rayon Viscose
Tip 1: Do not judge fabric quality only by price. Rs 10 cheaper per meter often means 20% less durability.
Tip 2: Order winter fabrics (velvet, wool-blend) by July-August. Prices go up 15-20% after September.
Over 800 textile mills operate in the Surat-Pandesara-Sachin belt, where Clothwala sources most of its polyester range.
