Velvet Fabric

Luxurious, deep-pile velvet fabric for royal-inspired fashion, bridal collections, and premium home textiles - wholesale velvet from Clothwala.

What is Velvet Fabric?

Velvet is a woven fabric with a soft, dense pile (short cut loops of fibre standing upright) that creates a characteristic rich, plush surface. The depth of colour in velvet comes from the way its pile reflects and absorbs light differently from different angles. Commercial velvet today is predominantly polyester or polyester-cotton blend, though silk velvet remains the luxury standard. Velvet comes in several variants - stretch velvet, crushed velvet, burnout velvet, and embossed velvet.

Key Properties

Key properties: dense soft pile with rich tactile quality, depth of colour due to pile light reflection, warm and heavy (typically 250-400 GSM), excellent for deep rich colours, can be printed with specialised techniques, requires careful care, elegant and premium visual appearance. Velvet is the fabric most associated with luxury and royalty in global textile history.

Origin & History

Velvet weaving originated in the Middle East and Central Asia, with Kashmiri and Iranian velvet weaving being historically significant. In India, velvet became associated with Mughal court fashion. Varanasi and Surat produce the majority of India's commercial velvet. Burnout velvet from Surat is widely exported. Today India exports velvet fabric primarily to the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Why Brands Choose Velvet

Velvet's association with luxury makes it a high-value fabric for bridal, festive, and occasion wear. In Indian market, velvet blouses, lehenga fabric, and sherwanis command premium prices. For Middle Eastern and Central Asian export markets, velvet fabric is a staple product in rich jewel tones. Burnout velvet and printed velvet increase the per-metre price significantly.

Velvet orders peak between September and January every year for winter fashion. We stock Korean velvet, silk velvet, and crushed velvet. Price range is Rs 80-200 per meter. The most common mistake buyers make is ordering summer-weight velvet for winter garments.

Buying Tips for Velvet

Tip 1: Do not judge fabric quality only by price. Rs 10 cheaper per meter often means 20% less durability.

Tip 2: Order winter fabrics (velvet, wool-blend) by July-August. Prices go up 15-20% after September.

Over 800 textile mills operate in the Surat-Pandesara-Sachin belt, where Clothwala sources most of its polyester range.
