Satin Fabric
Lustrous, smooth, and glamorous satin fabric for bridal, occasion, and premium fashion - polyester satin wholesale from India's trusted manufacturer.
What is Satin Fabric?
Satin is not a fibre but a weave structure - characterised by a high-gloss smooth front surface and a dull back. The satin weave floats warp yarns over multiple weft yarns, creating the characteristic sheen by maximising the surface exposure of yarns. Most commercial satin today is polyester satin (also called poly satin or charmeuse), though silk satin remains the luxury standard. Satin is one of the most reflective fabrics available and creates a visually stunning effect in both solid colours and printed designs.
Key Properties
Key properties: high lustre and shine (the most glamorous-looking fabric), smooth and cool to touch, fluid drape, shiny, shows fingerprints and marks easily, excellent print colour brightness on smooth surface, available from light (60 GSM charmeuse) to heavy (200+ GSM duchess satin). Satin's smooth surface makes digital prints appear particularly vivid.
Origin & History
Satin weave originated in medieval China - the name likely derives from Zaitun, the Arabic name for the Chinese port city of Quanzhou, from which satin fabric was exported to Europe. European royalty coveted satin for court dress from the 13th century onwards. In India, satin has been used in bridal and Mughal court costumes for centuries. Today, polyester satin is produced primarily in Surat and used across India for bridal fashion, party wear, lingerie, and home textiles.
Why Brands Choose Satin
Satin's glamorous appearance makes it the dominant fabric for bridal, party, and occasion wear in India. For bridal lehengas, sarees, and gowns, satin provides the luxurious visual quality that the bridal market demands. For exporters, printed satin fabric is a significant export category - particularly for Middle Eastern and African markets where lustre and rich colours are highly valued. Digital printed satin delivers some of the most visually striking results of any fabric.

Satin is tricky to source in bulk because quality varies dramatically between mills. We grade our satin into 3 categories - economy (Rs 40-55), standard (Rs 60-85), and premium (Rs 90-130) based on lustre, weight, and hand feel. About 60% of our satin orders go to nightwear manufacturers in Tirupur and Delhi. Key thing buyers should know - satin with higher denier count lasts longer.
Buying Tips for Satin
Tip 1: For garment export orders, plan 15-20% extra fabric for cutting waste and quality rejects. This is industry standard.
Tip 2: Always order a 1-meter sample cut before placing bulk orders. Fabric drape and hand feel can vary between batches.
Surat's textile market employs over 8 lakh workers directly and contributes Rs 46,000 crore annually to India's economy.
