Poplin / Cambric Fabric
Crisp, smooth cotton poplin and cambric - the most versatile print base fabric for kurtis, shirts, dress material, and mass-market ethnic fashion.
What is Poplin / Cambric Fabric?
Poplin (also called cambric in many Indian markets) is a plain-weave cotton fabric with a fine rib texture created by using finer threads in the weft than the warp. It produces a smooth, crisp surface that is heavier than lawn but lighter than canvas. Poplin is one of the most widely used fabrics in India for everyday ethnic wear and shirting. It takes printing exceptionally well (both screen and digital), holds colour vibrantly, and is easy to work with. The term 'cambric' in India often refers to a slightly lighter version of poplin used for kurtis and dress material.
Key Properties
Key properties: smooth, crisp surface ideal for sharp printing, moderate weight (90-150 GSM), breathable and comfortable, easy to sew and cut, excellent colour retention, minimal stretch, wrinkles moderately (requires ironing), good durability. Poplin/cambric is the workhorse fabric of the Indian ethnic wear industry - it balances print clarity, comfort, and cost-effectiveness better than almost any other cotton fabric.
Origin & History
Poplin originated in Avignon, France in the 15th century. It spread across Europe as a premium fabric and later became the dominant shirting and ethnic wear fabric in India during the 20th century. Major textile centres producing poplin include Surat, Ahmedabad, Erode (Tamil Nadu), and Bhilwara (Rajasthan).
Why Brands Choose Poplin / Cambric
Poplin/cambric is the backbone of India's ethnic wear print fabric market. It offers the best combination of print quality, comfort, and price. For kurti and dress material manufacturers, poplin is the most reliable fabric choice. The massive domestic market for printed cotton kurtis runs almost entirely on poplin and cambric. For export, Indian printed cotton poplin is competitive globally for fast fashion and mid-market ethnic wear.

At Clothwala, we have been in the textile wholesale business since 2018, operating from Surat - India's largest synthetic fabric hub. We work directly with 40+ mills, which means our buyers get factory-level pricing without middleman markup. Every fabric we list has been tested by our team for wash durability, colour fastness, and drape quality before it goes on the website. We ship to garment units, boutiques, and exporters across India with a minimum order of 200 meters.
Buying Tips for Poplin Cambric
Tip 1: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Tip 2: Check the GSM rating before ordering. Heavier GSM means more body and structure, lighter GSM gives more flow.
Surat mills specialize in polyester and blended fabrics. For pure cotton, we source from Ahmedabad and Bhilwara.
