Jersey / Knit Fabric
Soft, stretchy jersey and knit fabric for comfortable casuals, activewear, and modern ethnic wear - India's go-to knit fabric supplier for domestic and export brands.
What is Jersey / Knit Fabric?
Jersey is a knit fabric (as opposed to woven) made from cotton, polyester, rayon, or blends. Unlike woven fabrics, jersey is created by interlocking loops of yarn, giving it its characteristic stretch and soft drape. Single jersey is the most common - lightweight with stretch in one direction. Double jersey (interlock) is heavier with stretch in both directions. Jersey's stretch and recovery make it ideal for fitted garments, T-shirts, kurtis, leggings, and casual western wear. It is one of the most widely used fabrics globally for ready-to-wear fashion.
Key Properties
Key properties: natural stretch without added spandex (in cotton jersey), soft and comfortable against skin, excellent drape, easy to sew and cut, moderate to good breathability depending on fibre content, holds colour well, minimal ironing needed. Cotton jersey is the most breathable; polyester jersey is more durable and moisture-wicking. Viscose/rayon jersey has an excellent drape and silky feel.
Origin & History
Jersey fabric takes its name from the Channel Island of Jersey, historically known for fine wool knitting. The modern jersey fabric evolved through industrial knitting technology in the 19th century. Coco Chanel famously popularised jersey fabric for women's fashion in the early 20th century, transforming it from underwear fabric to mainstream fashion. Today, jersey is manufactured across India - particularly in Tiruppur (Tamil Nadu), which is India's knitwear capital producing vast quantities of cotton knit fabric.
Why Brands Choose Jersey / Knit
Knit fabrics including jersey represent one of the fastest-growing segments in India's domestic garment market. The rise of athleisure, casual wear, and comfort fashion has driven jersey demand significantly. For export, Indian cotton jersey (especially from Tiruppur) is globally competitive. The growing demand for sustainable fashion has boosted organic cotton jersey. For ethnic wear brands, jersey-based kurtis and casual ethnic separates are a growing category.

Written by Sahil Luthra, Founder - Clothwala.com | Based in Surat, India
At Clothwala, we have been in the textile wholesale business since 2018, operating from Surat - India's largest synthetic fabric hub. We work directly with 40+ mills, which means our buyers get factory-level pricing without middleman markup. Every fabric we list has been tested by our team for wash durability, colour fastness, and drape quality before it goes on the website. We ship to garment units, boutiques, and exporters across India with a minimum order of 200 meters.
Buying Tips for Jersey Knit
Tip 1: Fabric width matters for cutting efficiency. Our 44-inch fabric suits kurtis and blouses, 58-inch works better for sarees and gowns.
Tip 2: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Surat produces over 30 million meters of fabric daily, making it India's largest textile hub.
