Brocade / Jacquard Fabric
Opulent woven brocade and jacquard fabric with intricate patterns - India's finest for bridal wear, occasion ethnic fashion, and luxury export collections.
What is Brocade / Jacquard Fabric?
Brocade is a richly decorative woven fabric with raised patterns created by additional weft threads woven into the base fabric. Jacquard refers to the loom technology (Jacquard loom) used to create complex woven patterns. In common usage, brocade and jacquard are often used interchangeably for heavy, patterned woven fabrics. Traditional Indian brocade uses silk and zari (gold/silver metallic thread) to create intricate motifs like florals, paisleys, and geometric patterns. Modern brocade uses polyester, viscose, and metallic threads to achieve similar effects at accessible price points.
Key Properties
Key properties: heavy and structured fabric with excellent body, intricate woven (not printed) patterns that are permanent and durable, natural lustre from silk or metallic threads, rich and opulent appearance, relatively stiff drape (suitable for structured garments), high visual impact. Traditional silk brocade is the most prestigious; polyester brocade is more affordable and widely used for mass-market ethnic wear.
Origin & History
Brocade weaving in India has a history of over 2,000 years. Varanasi (Benaras) is the most famous centre for Indian brocade, producing the celebrated Banarasi silk brocade with gold zari work. Other centres include Surat (polyester brocade), Kanchipuram (silk brocade), and Hyderabad. Banarasi brocade received GI (Geographical Indication) protection. The Mughal period was the golden era of Indian brocade, with imperial workshops producing extraordinary pieces. Today, both traditional handloom brocade and modern power-loom jacquard are produced at scale across India.
Why Brands Choose Brocade / Jacquard
Brocade and jacquard fabric are essential for bridal and occasion ethnic wear - no other fabric delivers the same level of opulence and traditional luxury. The growing Indian bridal wear market (estimated at USD 40+ billion) drives strong demand for premium brocade. For export, Indian brocade fabrics are sought by global ethnic wear brands and diaspora markets. The global luxury fashion market's interest in Indian heritage textiles has further elevated brocade's profile.

Buying Tips for Brocade Jacquard
Tip 1: For digital printing, always use RFD (Ready for Dyeing) finish fabric. Pre-dyed fabric does not take digital prints cleanly.
Tip 2: Fabric width matters for cutting efficiency. Our 44-inch fabric suits kurtis and blouses, 58-inch works better for sarees and gowns.
Surat's textile market employs over 8 lakh workers directly and contributes Rs 46,000 crore annually to India's economy.
