Warp vs Weft: Understanding Fabric Weaves
Every woven fabric is built from two sets of threads - the warp and the weft. Understanding them explains why fabric stretches one way, tears another, and drapes the way it does. It is basic knowledge every serious buyer and designer should have.

What is the Warp?
The warp is the set of threads that run lengthwise, along the length of the fabric roll. They are held under tension on the loom and are usually stronger and less stretchy, giving the fabric its structure.
What is the Weft?
The weft (or filling) runs crosswise, from side to side, woven over and under the warp. Weft threads give width and often more give or stretch across the fabric.
Why It Matters
- Stretch - fabric usually has less stretch along the warp, more across the weft
- Cutting - patterns are cut on-grain (aligned to warp) for the right hang
- Drape - bias (diagonal) cutting uses both for a fluid fall
- Strength - warp direction is typically stronger
The Selvage Clue
The finished edges running along the length of the roll are the selvage - they run parallel to the warp, an easy way to identify grain direction before cutting.
