Tiruppur: India's Knitwear Export Capital Explained

Tiruppur knitwear hub guide for exporters: Rs. 46,000 crore FY26 exports, how the cluster works, UK FTA gains and how to source fabric for export.

Tiruppur: India's Knitwear Export Capital Explained

If you buy or sell cotton T-shirts, innerwear, kidswear or sportswear anywhere in the world, there is a good chance the garment passed through Tiruppur, a city in Tamil Nadu. It is India's best-known knitwear cluster, where yarn, knitting, dyeing, printing, stitching and finishing sit within a few kilometres of each other.

For fashion brands, exporters and sourcing teams, understanding Tiruppur explains how Indian knit supply chains really work, which markets are growing, and what overseas buyers expect from a fabric supplier.

Tiruppur by the Numbers

  • Tiruppur recorded record exports of about Rs. 46,000 crore (Rs. 460 billion) in FY 2025-26, up roughly 3% from Rs. 44,747 crore the year before.
  • It accounts for nearly 60% of India's knitwear exports.
  • The industry provides more than one million jobs in the region.
  • The Tiruppur Exporters Association targets Rs. 1 lakh crore in annual exports by 2030.

Why the Cluster Works

Tiruppur's strength is vertical integration in one geography, which shortens lead times and lets buyers manage quality across the chain.

  • Knitting and yarn: single jersey, rib, interlock, fleece and pique in cotton and blends.
  • Processing: dyeing, bleaching, compacting and printing units that serve both domestic and export orders.
  • Garmenting: thousands of stitching units handling basics to fashion programmes.

What the UK Trade Deal Changes

The India-UK trade agreement took effect on July 15, 2026, with duty-free access covering about 99% of Indian exports to the UK. This improves price competitiveness against rivals such as Bangladesh and Vietnam. Winning the orders will still depend on consistent quality, shorter delivery schedules, sustainability and transparent compliance documentation.

Woven vs Knit: Where Tiruppur Fits

What Exporters and Buyers Should Do

  • Plan fabric sourcing early: woven trims, linings, printed panels and contrast fabrics are often sourced from outside the knit cluster.
  • Request swatches, GSM and shrinkage data before bulk orders.
  • Keep documentation ready: GST invoices, test reports and compliance records.
  • Diversify markets, since UK, EU and other FTAs are opening new options.
