Rayon Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Rayon fabric guide for India: how it's made, types (challis, crepe, slub), uses, quality checks, care and wholesale price per metre from Clothwala.

Rayon Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Rayon is one of the most widely used fabrics in Indian fashion, from daily-wear kurtis and co-ord sets to flowing summer dresses. It is soft, breathable and drapes beautifully, which is why garment brands keep coming back to it every season. Yet many buyers still confuse it with viscose, cotton or polyester, and that confusion leads to wrong sourcing decisions.

This guide explains what rayon is, how it is made, the main types you will find in the wholesale market, how to judge quality, and what you should expect to pay per metre in India. It is written for designers, boutique owners and garment manufacturers who buy in volume.

What Is Rayon Fabric?

Rayon is the oldest manufactured fibre used in clothing. It is semi-synthetic: the raw material is natural cellulose, mostly wood pulp, which is chemically processed and spun into fibre. Because of this origin it feels natural on the skin, absorbs moisture and is biodegradable, but it is not a fully natural fibre like cotton or linen.

How Rayon Is Made

The most common route is the viscose process. Wood pulp is dissolved into a thick, syrupy solution (hence the word viscose), pushed through fine nozzles into a bath to form filaments, then spun into yarn and woven or knitted into fabric. Other regenerated cellulose fibres follow variations of this idea:

  • Viscose rayon: the most common type, breathable and affordable.
  • Modal: softer and more resistant to shrinkage.
  • Lyocell (Tencel): made in a closed-loop system that recycles the chemicals.
  • Cuprammonium rayon: uses copper and ammonia in processing, silky and fine.

Popular Rayon Fabric Types

When you source rayon wholesale, you will mostly see these constructions:

  • Rayon challis: lightweight, fluid and ideal for prints; a favourite for dresses, tops and scarves.
  • Rayon crepe: a crinkled texture that hides wrinkles and gives a dry, elegant hand.
  • Rayon slub: uneven yarn texture for kurtas, shirts and casual co-ords.
  • Rayon dobby: woven checks and small patterns for shirting and kurta sets.
  • Rayon blends: rayon with cotton, polyester, nylon or linen for better strength and easier care.

Rayon vs Cotton at a Glance

Feature Rayon Cotton
Origin Semi-synthetic (wood pulp) Natural (cotton plant)
Drape Fluid, flowing Crisper, more structured
Feel Silky-soft, cool Soft, breathable
Shrinkage Higher; pre-shrink advised Moderate
Print colour Vibrant, rich Good

Pros and Cons

Rayon's strengths and weaknesses decide which garments it suits.

  • Pros: soft hand, excellent drape, moisture-absorbent, takes vivid colour well, affordable, biodegradable.
  • Cons: can shrink, weaker when wet, may crease, and conventional rayon production is chemical-intensive.

Best Uses

  • Kurtis, kurta sets and co-ord sets
  • Summer dresses, skirts and tops
  • Blouses and shirts
  • Sarees, dupattas and scarves
  • Linings and loungewear

How to Judge Rayon Quality

Check GSM first: lighter rayon is typically around 70-110 GSM, while heavier crepes and slubs go higher. Look at yarn evenness, hand feel, colour fastness on prints, and shrinkage after a wash test. Always ask for a swatch and a strike-off before bulk orders, and confirm fabric width, as widths of around 44 inches (112 cm) are common in India.

Care Tips

  • Wash gently, preferably by hand or on a delicate cycle, in cool water.
  • Avoid wringing; press water out and dry in shade.
  • Iron on low to medium heat while slightly damp.
  • Pre-wash or pre-shrink fabric before cutting.

Rayon Price in India (Per Metre)

Indicative retail prices for plain rayon in India start from around Rs. 110/m and commonly sit in the Rs. 295-340/m band for slub, dobby and modal-rayon satin styles, depending on GSM, width and finish. Printed and value-added rayon costs more. Wholesale and bulk pricing with a direct mill supplier is usually lower than retail, and falls further with quantity. Prices change with yarn costs, so request a current quote.
