Muslin Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Muslin fabric guide for garment brands: what it is, types, uses, quality checks, care and the current India price range of Rs. 50-350 per metre.

Muslin Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Muslin is one of the oldest and most recognisable cotton fabrics in the world. A plain-weave cotton cloth that ranges from gossamer-light sheers to firm, sheeting-weight grades, it is the base behind soft summer kurtas, baby wear, dupattas, scarves and the test garments (toiles) designers use before cutting expensive fabric. In India it is also sold as mulmul.

For a fashion or garment business, muslin is attractive because it is breathable, skin-friendly and takes dye and digital print well. This guide explains what muslin is, its types, where it works best, how to judge quality, and what you should expect to pay per metre in India today.

What Is Muslin Fabric?

Muslin is a lightweight, plain-weave (one-over-one-under) cotton fabric. Its history is Indian-subcontinent history: in the 17th and 18th centuries, Mughal Bengal, with Dhaka at its centre, was the world's foremost muslin exporter, and the finest cloth was spun from extremely fine yarn. Dhakai Muslin received a Geographical Indication in 2020, and West Bengal's Bengal Muslin followed in 2024.

Main Types of Muslin

  • Plain cotton muslin / mulmul: the everyday grade for kurtis, dresses and dupattas. Typical price Rs. 100-150/m.
  • Printed muslin: digital or screen printed, popular for ethnic and casual wear. Roughly Rs. 80-145/m.
  • Organic cotton muslin: used for baby wear and swaddles; GOTS-certified grades sit around Rs. 120-150/m.
  • Double gauze: two loosely woven layers joined together, soft and crinkly. About Rs. 80-160/m depending on GSM.
  • Specialty muslin: bamboo or natural-indigo grades, up to Rs. 210-350/m.

Best Uses for Fashion Businesses

  • Summer kurtis, co-ord sets and flowy dresses
  • Dupattas, stoles and scarves
  • Baby wear, swaddles and sleepwear
  • Pattern-making toiles and sample garments
  • Quilt backing, home furnishing and photography backdrops

Pros and Cons

Pros: breathable, soft, easy to dye and print, affordable, suitable for sensitive skin.

Cons: wrinkles easily, can shrink on the first wash if not pre-shrunk, and finer grades can be sheer so may need lining.

How to Judge Muslin Quality

  • Hold it against light: even yarn and consistent weave, without thin patches.
  • Check GSM and thread count against your garment, since light grades suit scarves and heavier ones suit stitched garments.
  • Ask whether it is pre-shrunk or RFD (ready for dyeing) and test a swatch wash.
  • For printed muslin, check colour fastness and print sharpness on a sample before bulk.

Care Tips

Wash in cool water with mild detergent, avoid harsh bleach, and iron on a medium setting while slightly damp. Pre-wash the fabric before cutting for fitted garments.
