Georgette Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Georgette fabric guide for India: pure vs faux types, how it is made, uses, quality tests, care and wholesale price per metre (Rs. 90-880) for garment brands.

Georgette Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Georgette is a sheer, lightweight fabric with a soft, fluid fall and a slightly crinkled, matte surface. It is a staple of Indian ethnic wear, from sarees and dupattas to kurtis, lehengas and gowns, and it also works for Western blouses and dresses. For a garment brand, few fabrics offer such a wide price range and so many finishes.

Knowing the difference between pure silk georgette, faux (polyester) georgette and viscose georgette can save you money and protect your product quality. This guide covers how georgette is made, where it works best, how to judge quality and what you should expect to pay per metre in India.

What Is Georgette and How Is It Made?

Georgette is named after the early 20th century French dressmaker Georgette de la Plante, and the term appears in print from around 1915. Its crinkly texture comes from highly twisted yarns: alternating S-twist and Z-twist yarns are used in both warp and weft. This makes georgette springier and less lustrous than chiffon, which is why it holds volume and hides seams and body lines better.

Types of Georgette

  • Pure (silk) georgette: made from highly twisted silk yarn, about 60-90 GSM. Breathable, soft and takes deep dye shades.
  • Faux georgette (polyester): heavier in hand, more durable and better for heavy embroidery, but it traps heat in hot weather.
  • Viscose georgette: a soft, plant-based option with a cool feel, often used for sequin and embroidered work.
  • Embellished georgette: sequin, mirror-work, foil and laser-cut variants for occasion wear.

Indicative market rates per metre, drawn from published supplier listings:

  • Faux plain georgette (58 inch): about Rs. 90-160/m wholesale and Rs. 180-260/m retail.
  • Pure plain dyeable georgette (44 inch): about Rs. 380-480/m wholesale and Rs. 620-780/m retail.
  • Sequin, mirror-work and foil georgette: roughly Rs. 880-1,390/m.

Prices vary with width, weight, finish and order quantity, so always compare at the same specification.

Where Georgette Works Best

  • Sarees, dupattas and overlays
  • Kurtis, anarkalis, gowns and lehengas
  • Blouses, tops and flowing dresses
  • Summer garments (pure or viscose georgette for breathability)

How to Judge Georgette Quality

  • Hand test: pure feels grainy and cool; faux feels smoother and slippery.
  • Drape test: pure falls in soft, flowing folds; faux can look stiffer.
  • Light test: hold to light and check for an even, tight weave without thin patches.
  • Wrinkle test: pure releases creases fairly quickly; faux holds them longer.

Sewing and Care Tips

  • Use fine needles and sharp shears; georgette shifts and snags easily.
  • Cut on a flat surface, ideally with tissue paper underneath.
  • Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent and dry flat in shade.
  • Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth.
