Denim fabric guide: how denim is made, oz weights, raw vs stretch, quality checks and wholesale price in India (Rs. 100-490/m) for garment brands.
Denim is the workhorse of the global wardrobe. From jeans and jackets to skirts, shirts and bags, it is one of the few fabrics that sells in every season and every market. For a garment business, understanding denim properly, its weight, weave, stretch and finish, is the difference between a jean that sells and one that comes back.
This guide explains what denim is, how it is made, the main types, how to judge quality and what you should expect to pay per metre in India.

Denim is a sturdy cotton twill fabric. Its signature look comes from the construction: the warp yarn is dyed indigo while the weft yarn is left undyed. In the classic 3x1 twill (weft goes over three warp yarns and under one), more indigo shows on the face and more white on the back, which is why jeans are blue outside and pale inside.
Premium selvedge denim is woven on traditional shuttle looms, which produce a self-finished edge and narrow widths (around 28-32 inches). Most mass-market denim is woven on projectile or rapier looms in wide widths (roughly 48-66 inches).
Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz):
Modern stretch jeans have moved towards lighter weights, so 10-13 oz is the commercial sweet spot for most brands.
| Feature | Rigid (100% cotton) | Stretch (cotton + elastane) |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Firm, breaks in over time | Soft, comfortable from day one |
| Fit | Holds shape, can bag out less | Hugs the body, slim fits |
| Best for | Workwear, heritage, jackets | Skinny, slim and women's jeans |
| Typical price | Rs. 160-220/m | Rs. 130-200/m |
Wash inside out in cold water, avoid harsh detergents, and dry in shade to protect colour and elastane. Raw denim is washed sparingly.
Wholesale listings on Indian marketplaces show denim from roughly Rs. 100 to Rs. 490 per metre, with most commonly traded qualities between Rs. 150 and Rs. 225/m. Examples: 12 oz 100% cotton 3/1 twill around Rs. 175/m; 98% cotton + 2% lycra stretch at 12-13 oz around Rs. 155/m; knitted indigo around Rs. 225-240/m; and specialty herbal-dyed indigo near Rs. 490/m. Final rates depend on weight, width, finish, stretch and order quantity.
