Chiffon Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Chiffon fabric guide for Indian brands: how it is made, types, uses, quality checks, care and wholesale price per metre (Rs. 30-125/m), from a direct mill supplier.

Chiffon Fabric Guide: Types, Uses & Price in India

Chiffon is one of the most recognisable sheer fabrics in fashion. Light, airy and softly translucent, it floats around the body and catches movement better than almost any other woven. For Indian garment brands it is a staple in sarees, dupattas, kurti overlays, gowns, blouses and scarves, and it sells across both everyday and occasion-wear price points.

The word comes from the French chiffe, meaning cloth or rag, which is ironic for a fabric that looks so luxurious. This guide explains how chiffon is made, the main types, where it works best, how to judge quality, how to care for it, and what you should expect to pay per metre when buying wholesale in India.

What Is Chiffon and How Is It Made?

Chiffon is a lightweight, sheer, plain-weave fabric. Its signature look comes from highly twisted crepe yarns (both S-twist and Z-twist) woven in a balanced plain weave. The tight twist makes the yarn spring back, which gives chiffon its slightly rough, pebbly hand and a slight natural stretch, even though the cloth looks delicate. Under a magnifying glass it resembles a fine net or mesh.

  • Fibres: traditionally silk, now commonly polyester, nylon and viscose/rayon.
  • Weave: plain weave with twisted yarns.
  • Finish: slight shimmer, especially in silk and satin-finish versions.

Main Types of Chiffon

  • Polyester chiffon: the volume workhorse; affordable, easy to dye and print, and easy to care for.
  • Silk chiffon: the premium option with a fluid drape and natural lustre, usually dry-clean only.
  • Viscose chiffon: soft and breathable with a more matte, fluid fall.
  • Satin chiffon: a glossier face for eveningwear and bridal pieces.
  • Printed and embroidered chiffon: digital or screen prints, sequins and embroidery for sarees and dupattas.

Best Uses in Garments

  • Sarees, dupattas and stoles
  • Evening gowns, bridal overlays and wedding wear
  • Summer blouses, tops and kurti panels
  • Scarves, lingerie trims and decorative drapes

Chiffon: Pros and Cons

Advantages Challenges
Beautiful, fluid drape Slippery; difficult to cut and sew
Takes dye and print very well Frays easily; needs French or narrow-hem seams
Light, ideal for layering Sheer; usually needs a lining
Strong for its weight Silk chiffon can lose shape over time

How to Judge Chiffon Quality

  • Evenness: hold it to light; the sheerness should be uniform without thick or thin streaks.
  • Weight (GSM): wholesale chiffon commonly ranges from about 50 to 100+ GSM; match it to the garment.
  • Hand feel: a good chiffon is soft with a fine crinkle, not stiff or plasticky.
  • Print clarity: check edge sharpness and colour fastness on printed lots.
  • Width: commonly 44-45 inch or 58-60 inch; check before calculating yardage.

Chiffon Price in India (Wholesale)

Indicative wholesale listings in India show plain polyester chiffon from about Rs. 30-50/m, printed polyester chiffon from roughly Rs. 38-90/m depending on GSM, and embroidered or specialty chiffon at around Rs. 125/m or more. Silk chiffon is priced considerably higher and varies widely by quality. Final rates depend on GSM, width, print or finish, and order quantity, so always compare like-for-like samples.

Care Tips

  • Silk chiffon: dry clean.
  • Synthetic chiffon: gentle hand wash or delicate machine wash in cold water with mild detergent.
  • Do not wring; dry in shade, away from direct sun.
