Tamil Nadu Is Now India’s Top Textile Exporter
A major shift has taken place in India’s textile industry.
Tamil Nadu has emerged as the country’s largest textile exporter in FY2024-25, overtaking Gujarat and Maharashtra. Reported textile exports from the state reached about $7.997 billion, making this a significant milestone in India’s manufacturing story.
What makes this rise important is not just the number.
Tamil Nadu’s strength comes from a deeply connected textile ecosystem. Coimbatore has long been a major spinning hub, Tiruppur remains one of India’s most important knitwear clusters, and the state has built a strong base across spinning, knitting, processing, garments, and export-oriented manufacturing. Tiruppur Exporters’ Association says Tiruppur accounts for around 90% of India’s cotton knitwear exports, showing how powerful the cluster model has become.
This leadership also reflects long-term ecosystem building.
Recent reporting points to modernization, export-focused manufacturing, policy support, and stronger alignment with global compliance and buyer requirements as key reasons behind Tamil Nadu’s growth. Industry and government-linked coverage also notes that the state held about 21.2% of India’s textile and apparel exports in FY25.
Why does this matter?
Because it proves that manufacturing-led growth still has enormous power in India. Textiles remain one of the country’s most important job creators and export engines.
