Digital vs Rotary Printing: Which Is Cheaper for Your Order

Digital and rotary fabric printing compared on setup cost, colour count, detail, minimum quantity and per-metre economics — and how to tell which suits your order.

Buyers often ask which printing method is better. Neither is. They have different cost structures, and the right question is which is cheaper for your quantity and colour count.

The core difference

Rotary printing engraves a screen per colour. Those screens cost money and time before a single metre is printed — but once running, the per-metre cost is low and the machine is fast.

Digital printing jets ink directly onto the cloth. No screens, so no setup cost and no per-colour charge — but a higher per-metre running cost.

So rotary is a high fixed cost with a low variable cost, and digital is the reverse. Everything else follows from that.

How to tell which applies to you

Digital Rotary
Setup cost None Per colour, per design
Colour count Unlimited — no cost impact Each colour adds cost
Photographic detail, gradients Excellent Limited
Low quantities Economical Setup dominates the cost
Very high quantities Running cost dominates Cheapest per metre
Reorder a small top-up Easy Screens must exist or be re-cut

Practical rules of thumb

  • Sampling and small runs — digital, almost always. Screens for a 20 metre run make no sense.
  • Many colours, or gradients and photographic artwork — digital, regardless of quantity.
  • Simple artwork, few colours, large volume — rotary usually wins on per-metre cost.
  • A range with frequent small reorders — digital, because repeatability does not depend on holding screens.

The crossover point depends on colour count and current rates, which is why we ask for quantity and colour count before quoting rather than giving a blanket answer.

What we print

Our catalogue is high-definition digital print, which is why any design can be recoloured to your Pantone without a screen charge, and why a design can be reordered at any quantity — there is no screen to store or re-cut. For large-volume simple-artwork programmes, tell us the quantity and colour count and we will tell you honestly whether rotary would be cheaper for that specific order.

What this means for your artwork

If you are designing for digital, you are free — unlimited colours, gradients, photographic detail, fine linework. If you may move to rotary at volume later, keep the colour count disciplined and avoid gradients, or you will be redesigning at the point of scaling.
